Sometimes it’s said that what’s yours is yours to keep. Is that always true? There are some things you have that you probably want to hold forever, and other things that you might want to lose as soon as possible.
What about the “intangibles”—the things that aren’t obvious at first glance but mean more to you than any material item? Innocence, purity, naturalness, sincerity. Are these qualities yours to keep, or once gone, are they lost forever?
No one has the power to take away anything that God has given you. If that’s the only thing you get from reading this, it is enough. If other people have hurt you, have abused you, and you feel your innocence has been stolen from you, you’re not alone, and you’re definitely not a lost cause. Sometimes what seems saddest is how you might not even have been old enough or experienced enough to know what was happening to you. Maybe to the rest of the world you seem normal, but inside you feel that there is something needing much healing.
Here is the truth: all the good that God gives you—including innocence, purity, naturalness, sincerity—is yours permanently, even eternally. Yet this truth won’t mean much to you unless you claim it.
It may feel like you are reclaiming the innocence and purity that God expresses in you, but these spiritual qualities were never lost or stained. God’s mothering and fathering have been maintaining and cherishing you all along, through every challenge in your life.
God is good. That is a simple thing. But think on it for a moment. It is a simple, wonderful thing. You will never have any other authority in your life but God. No one controls the real you, the child of God’s creating, but God, good. No one has power over you, no one affects you, but God. No one can truly touch you or your thought but God. Never, never believe for an instant that you deserve pain. Whatever wrong has been done to you is not your fault. You are God’s loved, treasured reflection. No one has hurt God. No one can get past God and hurt His reflected goodness in you. Now is the time to claim this for yourself.
The purity of God’s goodness is intact. Deep inside, deep in your heart, you will discover your own everlasting purity, given to you by God. “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God,” said Jesus. God’s flawlessness would have to change in order for your spiritual purity to change. Your innocence is also intact. Knowing what’s true of God and of yourself shows that you’re innocent of fears or hates or abuses.
There is no mortal history to God. God just is. His eternality determines your reflected freedom from the past, from human times and events, and lets you express His purity and peace right now. God is perfect, divine Spirit, forever whole and good. As God’s dear offspring, you mirror Him and express His wholeness. You are useful to Him. He loves you and nurtures you and answers your every need because God alone is your forever Mother and Father.
Walk into the sunshine of divine Spirit and feel God’s cleanness. Feel God expressing this cleanness in you, giving you peace and dominion. He is doing it right now for you with great love. Mary Baker Eddy writes about the beauty and goodness of God’s kingdom, which is where you live. She states, “Corporeal sense, or error, may seem to hide Truth, health, harmony, and Science, as the mist obscures the sun or the mountain; but Science, the sunshine of Truth, will melt away the shadow and reveal the celestial peaks.” The “celestial peaks,” the places of God’s bright goodness, are where you have always traveled. Give up the pain, the past, the loss. You can! God will dispose of it all. Reclaim yourself. What God has given you is yours to keep. Let him love you and multiply your talents.
