Search Site Books Help
Overview
Search Site Books is a search tool designed to help you locate and research passages, words or phrases in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the Bible (King James Version), and Retrospection and Introspection (Mary Baker Eddy's autobiography). At the top of the page you'll find several features:
For the keyword search (detailed information below), the results are displayed in the lower section of the page. The word or phrase you've searched for is displayed in red. The underlined citation at the top of each resulting passage is a link to that passage within the book. Click on the search results links to view the full book page or Bible chapter from which the passage was taken.
When you've searched by citation, the passage is displayed surrounded by red triple brackets ( [[[ and ]]] ).
If the results occur too low on the page, it may be necessary to scroll down the page to see them.
The links directly to each book at the far right bring you to the table of contents for that book, which is displayed in the lower section of the page. The chapter titles in this display are links—click on them to begin reading text.
Search Techniques
1. Keyword Search:
- First, choose the book you'd like to use by clicking on the corresponding button. After each search, the button selection will return automatically to Science and Health.
- Enter your search word or phrase in the keywords search field, then click the Go! button. Note: The search function is case sensitive, so you will find some variation in results depending on the capitalization of your search words.
- The search function is based on stemming—that is, it returns results based on the suffix of your search word. For example, if you enter the word creation, you will get results for creation, create, created, creates, creative, etc., ranked according to relevance.
- Use double quotes if you would like to restrict the search to the exact word you've entered-for example, "creation" returns results only for that word.

2. Multiple Keyword Search:
- Multiple word searches locate the occurrence of two or more words within a paragraph.
- Multiple words should be connected by and, or, not. Tender and mercies, for example, results in paragraphs having both words, but not necessarily occurring next to each other. Tender or mercies yields results having either word, or both. Tender not mercies displays occurrences of tender but not mercies.
- And, or, not may be combined in a search. For example, Jesus and Mary not Martha will return paragraphs containing Jesus and Mary but not Martha. Jesus and Mary or Martha will return Jesus and Mary or Jesus and Martha.
- Phrase searches locate an exact phrase within a paragraph. Use double quotes around the phrase to find an exact match to the sequence of words. For example, "image and likeness" will return that exact phrase, not passages that simply contain those words.
- Wildcard searches leave room for an unknown character or characters within a search word. Use a question mark for a single unknown character or an asterisk for multiple characters. For example, l?ve will bring passages with love or live in them. The example *finite* will return results including the words infinite, finite, indefinitely, etc.
3. Citation Search:
Enter your citation in the citation search field, then click the Go! button to activate the search. The full book page on which the citation is found will appear in the lower section of the browser window.
Formating the citation for Science and Health:
- Put in the page number alone if you like, or add a colon with a line number or line range.
- For example, 475 alone will bring you to the top of page 475, and the red bracket will surround the entire page.
- Typing in 475:11, however, will put the open bracket at the start of the first sentence that begins on that line. The close bracket will be at the end of that paragraph.
- Typing 475:11-13 will move the close bracket to the end of the last sentence that ends on line 13.
Formating the citation for Retrospection and Introspection:
- This citation search is very similar to that of Science and Health, except it requires the prefix Ret before every entry.
- For example, Ret 23 alone will bring you to the top of page 23 in Retrospection and Introspection, and the red bracket will surround the entire page.
- Typing in Ret 23:13, however, will put the open bracket at the start of the first sentence that begins on that line. The close bracket will be at the end of that paragraph.
- Typing Ret 23:13-16 will move the close bracket to the end of the last sentence that ends on line 16.
Formating the citation for the Bible:
- See the chart below for abbreviations for books of the Bible, or type them out in full.
- Typing in Gen 3 will bring you to Genesis, Chapter 3.
- Typing in Gen 3:6 will bring you to Genesis, Chapter 3, Verse 6.
- Typing in the title or abbreviation of a book of the Bible alone will not bring back a result.
- Numbered book titles must be entered with Roman numerals (II Tim 1:7 or I Corinthians 13:1) in the citation search field.
