Adobe Acrobat Reader and PDF support

Download free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader

Overview

The Study Edition PDF format of the eBibleLesson is available as an Adobe Acrobat® PDF file. Unlike Web pages, which look different on different browsers and platforms, PDF files preserve the exact look and layout of the original documents on screen and in print, regardless of what computer platform, browser or printer you use.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view the full-text version of the eBibleLesson PDF. If you don't have Acrobat Reader, you can download it free from the Adobe Web site. Choose the version for your computer's operating system and follow the instructions.

Downloading, viewing and printing

Once you have installed Acrobat Reader on your system, it should automatically integrate with your browser as a plugin. If Acrobat Reader doesn't work, it may be because you're using an older browser. Try upgrading your browser from one of the sites listed below:

When you click on the PDF file of the eBibleLesson, Acrobat Reader will launch and open the file within your browser window. If it does not launch automatically, try downloading the PDF to your computer as described below.

Once you have the file open, you can view it using Acrobat Reader's navigation tools, or you can print it by selecting "Print" from the file menu.

Note to users of Acrobat Reader v.8.0: If you see messages about "postscript errors," or if the PDF prints out with unreadable characters, you may need to uninstall Acrobat Reader version 8.0. Instead, you can download and install version 7.0.9 from the Adobe website.

Using Acrobat Reader

Downloading and opening PDF files

Downloading the PDF to your desktop, rather than opening it in the browser, removes the need to wait for the browser to download each PDF page individually. To download a PDF file to your desktop, right-click (Mac users: CTRL and click) on the link to the PDF and do one of the following in the menu that appears:

  • In Internet Explorer, select "Save Target As..."
  • In Firefox and Netscape, select "Save Link As..."

You will be asked where you want to save the file. You can save the file anywhere, but your desktop might be most convenient if you want to open it right away. After the file downloads, you can double-click to open it.

If you have IE, and you get an error message that the file cannot be downloaded using the above method, try opening the PDF and saving it by clicking the "save" icon (it looks like a floppy disk) in the top menu bar.

Printing

Printing the Study Edition PDF in black and white is faster and uses less ink. Color printers provide a setting for black-and-white printing, found in different locations depending on the printer's make and model. To find it, click "Print," click the "Properties" button, and look for the black-and-white setting (sometimes called "grayscale") in the menus available.

If you are having difficulty printing, or if the file won't print correctly, turn the printer off for at least 15 seconds and then restart it to remove anything that may be cached in the printer's RAM (Random Access Memory). Print the PDF file again. If the file prints, the problem was full printer memory.

To copy the citations

Click the "Select text" button in the toolbar at the top of the PDF window. Click and drag your mouse over the citations to highlight them. Then hit Ctrl+C (on a Mac, Command+C), which will copy the highlighted text. You can paste it into another document by hitting Ctrl+V (Command+V) or by selecting Edit>Paste.

Changing size

You can view the Study Edition PDF files at various sizes, from extreme close-up (providing large type for the vision-impaired) to two pages side by side.

To change sizes quickly:

  • On a PC, use the key combinations Ctrl– or Ctrl+.
  • On a Mac use Command(Apple)– or Command(Apple)+.
  • Or click the plus (+) or minus (-) in the Zoom toolbar.

Layouts
You can choose from three layouts: Single Page, Continuous or Continuous-facing. Selecting Continuous-facing displays two pages side by side as in a printed newspaper.

Getting around

  • To move from page to page: use the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard. Or use the arrows in Acrobat's top or bottom toolbars, or use the scrollbar on the right side of the window. When dragged, the scrollbar will display page numbers.
  • To use a thumbnail index: click the Show/Hide Navigation icon in the top toolbar to display a left column containing thumbnails of the pages. Click a thumbnail to move to that page. Clicking a specific part of a thumbnail will display that area of the corresponding page (unless the whole page is already visible).

Most controls described above can also be found in Acrobat Reader's pull-down menus. Note that these menus will not appear when Reader is running as a browser plugin.

PDF access for the visually impaired

Access.Adobe.Com is a tool that allows visually impaired users to read Adobe PDF files. The tool converts PDF documents into simple HTML or ASCII text which can then be read by a number of screen-reading programs that analyze the HTML and present it as audible speech.
