"What I say unto you I say unto all, watch."   —Jesus

‘It could happen for me, too ….’

I was enjoying working as the Reading Room librarian for First Church of Christ, Scientist, Nairobi, Kenya. I was going to school at the same time and looking for a job in my field of study.

In a day at the Reading Room, I would usually have more than four people who would come in wanting to know what Christian Science was about. They wanted to know the benefits. Some of them were isolated from their families or were looking for a job. One person’s example helped me see that I, too, could find employment in my field of study.

A man came in who had been in prison. His family and friends didn’t want him back. He asked for enough money for transportation. But I knew that God had a plan for him, and I could do something more than give him money.

Finding the right job could happen for me, too.

I thought about how God created His children in His own image and likeness, as it says in the Bible’s first chapter of Genesis. All that God created is good, and man and woman are part of that creation. So I talked to this man about his purpose for about four hours. We talked about how we aren’t defined by the events in our life—by what happens to us. God defines us and we’re spiritual. His manner changed, and before he left, I gave him a Sentinel, a Science and Health, and a Bible.

When he came back weeks later, he told me he had seen his family. “I’m working,” he also said. That was a very nice ending and made me think these things really can happen. Finding the right job could happen for me, too. Through my study of Christian Science, I’d learned that we can all be healers. Studying the Bible and Science and Health, and understanding that God is the true source of everything good, helps provide a firm foundation for prayer in any situation we may face.

I knew that I needed some experience in my field of study before I graduated. With God as my guide, I set out on the road to looking for employment. There were a couple of lines from the Lord’s Prayer and also from its spiritual interpretation in Science and Health that helped me:

“Why not tell a few friends here and there that I am looking for employment?”
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Enable us to know,—as in heaven, so on earth,—God is omnipotent, supreme.
And . . .
Give us this day our daily bread; Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections;

I used to say the Lord’s Prayer when I was a little child, before I knew anything about Christian Science. But after reading this spiritual interpretation I loved it because I could clearly see what the ideas meant. So these verses are something I prayed with.

And then I thought, “Why not tell a few friends here and there that I am looking for employment?” I told one friend, and I didn’t think anything more about it until he called me back and encouraged me to send him my résumé. Soon, I got a call and booked an interview for an accounting position. Before the interview, I turned to the chapter on “Prayer” in Science and Health and began considering one of the ideas on page 14: “Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man’s dominion over the whole earth.” Sharing thoughts with members of my church was also useful.

I’m learning, and proving myself.

When I went in to the interview, I was very scared at first. This was something I’d never done! But I realized again that if God provided for the man who came into the Reading Room, why not for me also? Even though I started to get annoyed when I was kept waiting for a while in the reception area, and wondered if maybe this was a mistake, I prayed to know that God gave me dominion. God gave me all the intelligence, patience, and wisdom I needed to complete the interview with success. Faith was also important, and it reminded me of this verse from the Bible: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

In the interview, I was asked basic questions about things I’d been learning in college. I also realized it was never “about me.” When you’re reflecting God and leaning on Him, it’s never about you.

Soon, I was offered the job as an accounting clerk. And I still hold this position today. At first it was very challenging. But I’m learning, and proving myself.

What amazes me are the spiritual qualities we all have. They aren’t things you can go around looking for. They are things that we already express—knowledge, wisdom, understanding. Anyone can apply these qualities in looking for a job. It’s just up to us to let them flow.
