I chose the God option

Evan Mehlenbacher

Recently, I had to call our telecommunications service provider to transfer my phone and Internet services to a new office location. When I finally navigated my way through an endless number of menu options, I told the customer service representative that I wanted to cancel my old Internet service and restart it at my new space. I politely waited for her to pull up my records. Without asking me when I wanted to stop service, she deleted my account without further question.

“Not yet,” I protested. “Cancel the service two weeks from now, not today!”

“Oh, it’s too late,” she replied.

“No, it can’t be,” I urged. “I need my email service!”

This was not good news.

All communication begins with the infallible divine Mind.

She didn’t know how to retrieve my account. But she said it would eventually be restored, and assured me not to worry. The words sounded fine, but in fact, my email service was never restored, and I was later told it would be 5-7 days before I could get it back. My heart sank. I felt victimized by someone else’s mistake and unable to do anything about it. I was concerned that my Christian Science practice might suffer if I couldn’t be in touch with people via email.

But I knew better than to give in to discouragement and hopelessness. So I prayed from a perspective that promised a solution. I examined the spiritual facts that begin with God’s ultimate perfection and His irrepressible reflection. From this perspective, all communication begins with the infallible divine Mind. It’s not transmitted through telephone companies, DSL lines, or computer routers. It goes directly from God to His idea.

No sooner did I lose this fear, then an angel message landed on my mental doorstep.

If I was willing to accept this spiritual fact, then I also had to admit that divine Mind communicates intelligently. And that this communication can never cease, stop, or be interrupted by human error. In fact, I couldn’t be the helpless victim of a mistake anymore than someone else could be the willing agent of one. This meant that my practice wasn’t at the mercy of human error or oversight. God ordered, organized, and protected all my business activities; I didn’t have to go through a seven-day waiting period for proper communication to take place.

Prayer gave me a sense of conviction and peace. I felt assured that something would work out to meet my needs and those of my clients, even if I wasn’t sure what that specific answer would be. No sooner did I lose this fear, then an angel message landed on my mental doorstep, compelling me to call a different number at the telecommunications company and ask for a tech person.

I obeyed.

There would be no delays, not even for a minute.

This time I punched through the calling options patiently until I’d navigated to a different department altogether. An intelligent young man who knew all the answers to my problems answered my call. Within 20 minutes he restored my email, transferred my old account to my new one, and had me completely set up for my move. There would be no delays, not even for a minute. These results were better than originally promised. “Hallelujah!” I exclaimed. I was tremendously grateful to witness God’s beneficent care. And I thanked the tech expert profusely as he finished.

All evidence of the previous mistake was erased. My new account was fully established and there was no need to call the company again.

I value this experience because it’s been a vivid reminder never to let my thinking fall to the level of despair and despondency over “what to do next.” Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares.”

Rather than complaining and worrying about bumps in the road, I’ve seen how maintaining a spiritual focus brings God’s angel messages into view. Even when it looks like there’s a maze of options, I’ve learned to trust divine Mind to take me straight to the answer.
